Xanthos ancient city Kas Antalya.The ancient city of Xanthos was founded on two hills along the banks of the Xanthos River, now known as the Eschen Stream. Xanthos is one of the important cities of the ancient Lycian civilization, which was considered an administrative and religious center. According to ancient records, it was founded in the 8th century.
The ruins of the city and its sad history attract many tourists. Xanthos did have a nation of warriors. The city was under siege by Persia. Husbands talked to their wives when they realized they couldn’t win. The wives and children chose to die rather than surrender. After the invasion of the Persians, the inhabitants killed all the women and children. Then they burned down the city and committed suicide by throwing themselves into the flames. There were no survivors in this city, except for 80 families who were not in the city. After the tragedy, the city was rebuilt, but after 100 years the fire again hit the city. The inhabitants of Xanthos, who had a warrior lineage, rebuilt the city, which continued to exist for a long time as an important center
You can drive to the front of the ancient city of Xanthos. The road will divide the city into two parts. There are two different directions to travel to visit the ruins of Xanthos. The left side of the city is located on the side of the ticket office. Every step is a story. Monumental tomb, church. If you continue to the left, you will reach the necropolis. It can be a little difficult to walk among the bushes on a narrow path. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes so that your journey is safe. If you turn right, you can see the area where the basilica is located. If you are not tired, then climb to the very top of the mountain. Here you will see a panoramic view of the city.
The other side of the ancient city is more magnificent, including the agora and theater. The Acropolis is right behind this section. Unfortunately, the original War Memorial is now in London and it will take you 3 hours to see the whole city. It is very hot in summer for excursions, in winter or spring it will be more comfortable to travel through the ruins of the city. Excavations are still ongoing.
The ancient city of Xanthos is located near the village of Kinik in the Kas region. Kınık signs can be used to go to the ancient city. The city can be reached without a car. Take the Fethiye – Kalkan bus and ask to stop near the village of Kinik. You just have to walk 2 km. walk to the ancient city. Distance from Fethiye to Xanthos 46 km.
Summer visits are from 08:30 to 18:30 (April 15 – October 2), and winter visits are from 08:30 to 17:00 (October 3 – April 14). In addition, the first day of religious holidays is closed until 13:00.
The ruins of Xanthos have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List due to the authenticity of the Lycian civilization and the importance of the finds obtained during the excavations. You may come across the second name of the city – Xanthus.
