Sunken City
The ancient city of Aperlai is a small port city located in the Kekova region, between Kas and Demre. At the beginning of a long and narrow bay, between the Sychak Peninsula and the mainland, there are the ruins of the ancient city of Aperlai. The city existed from the end of the 4th century BC to the beginning of the 7th century AD. Aperlai was not a very important city in history, but it managed to get rich.
The ancient city of Aperlai remained under water as a result of the rise of sea water after the earthquake. The easiest way to get to the city is by sea. A church, a sewer pipe, a breakwater, a mooring ring and several residential buildings can be seen in the depths of the sea waters.
The largest ruins are thick fortress walls that begin on a hill and smoothly go into the sea. There are many sarcophagi with Roman inscriptions in the city. Near the port are the remains of two Roman baths.
About a thousand people lived in the ancient city of Aperlai, who were able to glorify the city. The inhabitants have created something very rare and magical – royal purple. A dye of this color was obtained by grinding mollusk shells.
It takes 12,000 shellfish to produce 1.4 grams of purple dye. At the time, the dye was 20 times more expensive than gold. In ancient times, purple-dyed fabrics were popular. In Anatolia, this is the first city where fabric dyeing took place.
