Know More About Hadrian’s Gate, the Famous Arch in Antalya

What to know before you go

Situated on Atatürk Boulevard in the heart of Antalya, Hadrian’s Gate is a remarkable historical landmark that dates back to 130 AD. Constructed to honor Emperor Hadrian’s visit, this impressive structure has withstood the passage of time and remains a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient architecture.

As you explore Antalya, it’s impossible to miss one of the city’s most iconic historical landmarks: Hadrian’s Gate. Dating back to 130 AD, this grand structure was originally built to honor the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian to Attaleia, which is now Antalya. Unsurprisingly, it also serves as one of the main entrances to Kaleiçi, the city’s charming historic district. Known locally as Hadriyanüs Kapısı, the gate was once part of the city’s outer walls and became a key passageway after its construction.

Architecturally, the two towers flanking the gate come from different historical periods. The southern tower, known as the Tower of Julia Sancta, is a Roman-era structure and stands apart from the gate. The northern tower, on the other hand, dates back to the 13th century and is linked to the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I, featuring an Arabic inscription. The contrast between the two towers adds to the gate’s historical richness, with the southern tower’s inscription further confirming its ancient origins.

Hadrian’s Gate is a classic example of a Roman triumphal arch, featuring three evenly spaced archways. The gate stands about eight meters (26.2 feet) tall, measured from the ancient pavement to the top of its entablature. On both the front and back sides of the gate, you’ll find beautifully detailed façades made up of four columns each, crafted from white marble, with the exception of the granite column shafts. The entablature at the top of the gate is particularly impressive, stretching out to both sides at a height of 1.28 meters (4.2 feet), adorned with a frieze that showcases intricate floral designs, along with an ornate cornice featuring lion heads and other decorative motifs.

The barrel vaults above the archways add to the architectural beauty, with caissons that are decorated with individual floral patterns and rosettes. The gate was first documented in 1817 by the Irish-British hydrographer, Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort, who included it in his travel diary about his exploration of Asia Minor’s southern coast. Beaufort’s account suggests that the gate may have originally been taller, but this extension appears to have been destroyed by the 19th century, as later records do not mention it.
