Antiphellos Ancient Theater

What to know before you go

Antiphellos Ancient Theater is one of the names of the city of Kas in the Lycian period. Antiphellos has been known as a trading city since the middle of the 2nd century BC. In the Lycian Union, he was limited to one vote.

Antiphellos Ancient Theater

The Antiphellos Ancient Theater is the only theater in Anatolia built overlooking the sea. Wherever a beautiful view opens, the Lycians built cities. The theater leans against the hillside and faces the sea. This is a great place to watch the sunset.

If you look closely at the theater, you can see that it is built in the shape of a horseshoe. The seating rows are divided into three sections with four vertical ladders. The theater has a capacity of 3000 people. In 2008, it was restored.

Antiphellos and Phellos

Antiphellos was located on the opposite side of the city of Phellos, hence the name. The prefix Anti means the opposite. Over time, Antiphellos developed and became rich. The city flourished thanks to the trade in cedar wood from the forests of the region. Independent existence led to the separation of the two cities.

Ancient ruins in Antiphellos

The remains of the ancient city of Antiphellos are scattered in the center of Kas. You don’t need to buy a tour to immerse yourself in History. All the ruins of the ancient city of Antiphellos are freely accessible.

An important artifact is the king’s sarcophagus. One of the most intact sarcophagi that have survived to this day. The inscriptions on it cannot be read, therefore it is impossible to determine who it belonged to.
To the north east of the theater is a burial chamber with 24 female images. Girls are dancing and holding hands. By the decoration of the facade, it can be determined that the buildings were created in the 4th century BC.

The water systems of the ancient cities of Lycia are based on cisterns. The remains of two cisterns have been preserved in Antiphellos.
If you take a walk, you can find many rock tombs and sarcophagi. There are many Gothic tombs on the hill with Lycian inscriptions. In the South-East there is a church that has been turned into a mosque.
