Karain Cave, also known as the Black Cave, is located at an impressive 390 meters above sea level, nestled at the base of Mount Sam. The entrance of the cave is situated approximately 100 meters above a travertine plain, which, during the Pleistocene era, was likely a lake. The cave itself consists of three expansive chambers, divided by calcite walls, and connected by narrow, winding corridors. Inside, visitors can marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites that decorate the chambers.

At the entrance, traces of recent archaeological excavations are visible, giving visitors a sense of the ongoing historical importance of the site. Hikers exploring the area may also spot remnants of stone tool production scattered across the surrounding floor, offering a direct link to the ancient humans who once lived here. However, visitors should note that collecting these artifacts is prohibited by Turkish law, and violators face strict penalties.

For smaller objects, such as animal bones and teeth, you can visit a small museum located near the cave’s entrance.

The cave is open to the public daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (with earlier closing hours at 5:00 PM during winter). To reach the cave entrance, take a steep, rocky path that starts from the ticket office near the parking lot. The path requires some climbing and is not shaded, so be sure to bring sunscreen, bottled water, and hiking boots for a more comfortable journey.

While the cave does have a lighting system, it can be unreliable, so it’s advisable to bring your own flashlight. The floor inside is wet and slippery, so exercise caution while walking. Also, be mindful that the narrow passages between the chambers may not be suitable for those with claustrophobia.

Getting There:

Karain Cave is located 35 km northwest of Antalya, near Yagca Village. Public transport does not reach the cave, so the best options are renting a car or taking a taxi. A visit to Karain Cave can easily be combined with a trip to the ancient city of Termessos, located just 20 km to the southwest.

By car: From the center of Antalya, take the D650 highway towards Burdur. After driving 25 km, turn left (west). The exit is clearly marked, and you can continue on Karain Street (Karain Caddesi), which will lead you directly to the parking area near the cave.

Alternatively, take the D350 road from Antalya towards Denizli, and after 26 km, turn right. From here, the cave is 11 km to the northeast.
