What to know before you go
Perge is an ancient city located within the borders of Aksu district, 18 km east of Antalya, and once the capital of the Pamphylia Region. It is thought that the acropolis in the city was founded during the Bronze Age. During the Hellenistic period, the city was considered among the richest and most beautiful cities in the old world.
Known as “Parha” and believed to have lived during the Hittites period, Perge was one of the most organized cities of Anatolia during the Roman period. Located 18 km east of Antalya between the Düden and Aksu rivers, Perge is 30 km from Belek. Thanks to its remote location from the sea, it was protected from the oppression and looting of pirates. Thus, there was no stagnation in the development process. Like Side, Perge made an agreement with Alexander the Great in 334 AD. Thus, the city did not experience wars and destructions. The city lived through the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
Its 15,000-seat theater was built in the 2nd century AD. Located right next to the theater, the stadium has an audience capacity of 12,000 people. This is the best preserved stadium in the Aegean region, except for Aphrodisias. There are 30 rooms that are thought to be used as shops under the seats of the stadium.
Perge is also a very important city for Christianity. One of the most important figures of Christianity, St. Paul followed the Aksu River on his missionary journeys. The city and the river are accepted as holy places of Christianity as mentioned in the Bible.
Numerous sculptures and works of art have been found during recent excavations. Among the sights of Perge are its gates, Agora, Nymphaeum, colonnaded streets, cemetery, Basilica and Acropolis.
Perge can be visited every day between 09.00-19.00 in summer (April-October) and 8.30-17.30 in winter season.
Many wonderful statues, sarcophagi and other finds from Perge are now in the Archaeological Museum in Antalya, so visiting this place is a great addition to the trip.
It would be logical to go to Perge from Antalya on the same day and visit the Aspendos ruins and Kurşunlu waterfall. If you have a car, you can try to drive to Termessos and Karain caves during the tour.
By public transport: Take the AntRay tram from the center of Antalya to the eastern terminal (Meydan). From there, it is possible to take a minibus to Aksu and then walk to Perge or take a taxi. Aksu is only 2 km away from the ruins. Alternatively, you can go to Aksu by minibus from the bus station.
By taxi: You can take a taxi ride from the center of Antalya to Perge, then to Aspendos and back to Antalya.
By car: Perge is located on the eastern side of Antalya, very close to the D400 route connecting Antalya to Side and Alanya. After approximately 4 km from the airport by car from Antalya direction, leave this road and follow the Perge signs and go north. The distance of Perge to the center of Antalya is 19 km, to Side – 61 km and to Alanya – 120 km.
